Larch

Larch

A clean, uniformly textured softwood.

Larch is a reddish coloured deciduous softwood, with a smooth clean grain that often comes with long, cylindrical bole for around two thirds of its length. Prominent growth rings are often present throughout the wood due to its highly resinous qualities, with a clearly defined heartwood that differs in colouration from the sapwood.

One of the heavier softwoods available, Larch possesses a uniform texture that makes it an ideal choice for cladding, exterior joinery, flooring and decking. Its light colour and reasonably hard-wearing nature has made it a popular wood for indoor cycle tracks over the past few decades, giving you a good example of its finished colour and tone.

Southern Yellow Pine

Southern Yellow Pine

A strong hard-pine with a fine texture.

Southern yellow pine is a lightly coloured pine with a tight straight grain and an excellent strength to weight ratio. It possesses the same odour as all pines, giving a lovely fresh smell to furniture and home interiors. This is due to its resinous nature, which also leads to distinct growth rings throughout the wood.

This hard, dense wood is an excellent choice for interior construction and is considered a good choice for trusses, joists and subflooring, thanks to its moderately rot-resistant qualities. Expect a fine to medium texture that is easy to work and should pose no problems with shattering or splintering.

Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar

A distinct, durable and versatile softwood.

Western Red Cedar is a reddish-brown softwood that may present varying light and dark areas with the absence of resin channels. Straight grained with a medium texture, it is valued for its durable properties and natural resistance to decay, making it a common choice for the construction of wooden boats and the external timber cladding on buildings.

The Western Red Cedar possesses an individual odour, attributable to a particular oil within the wood that is said to give it an insecticidal property. Chests and containers made from this material can retain their smell for decades. A moderately inexpensive wood that is known to work well and is a popular choice for exterior construction purposes.
